Leave your Melbourne Cup headgear to the last minute? Uh huh, me too.
But we can be thankful that for the 2014 racing season, almost anything goes in the fashion stakes. Judging by some of the pieces parades about at the Caufield Cup, angelic metallic headbands, bold structure, lace and 1920s-inspired headwear are all tipped to make an appearance. And this is all wonderful news for those of us that like to leave things to the last minute – because you can make all of these in under half an hour!
Doily mouse ears
The trick to this is using the right doily. You want one that has a circular patterned fringe. Simply cut, glue onto pipe cleaners and secure to a headband. Easy! More instructions HERE:
For something a little more mysterious, take inspiration from JenniferBehr.com – simply pin a piece of lace into your hair and across your face. This look also lends itself well to netting.
If you really want to make a statement, then go on with your bad self and attach a pair of bunny or kitty ears made out of the same lace.
Upcycled broach headpiece
I made this headpiece using an old broach and flowers from Spotlight. Just wrap a comb in ribbon, then glue in your flowers. Wrap with another layer of ribbon to hid the glue. Pin your broach in place, and you’re done! Best of all, you can reuse your broach afterwards.
Another super easy project that will take you only 15 minutes! I upcycled an old necklace pendant and stitched it into a ribbon. You could also use a large earring.
Or… glue old bits of jewellery onto a piece of felt and attach a hair clip…
If I was a little more organised and had some time up my sleeve, here are some other looks I’d love to try.
You’d need the right outfit, but paired with a sparkly broach at the centre this look is FUN. Credit: Song of Style
Oooooh…. Hat + mesh + flower = perfection.
Wire eye mask
I would definitely need more than half an hour for this beauty, but it’s oh-so-pretty and I’m DETERMINED to wear someday!
Mermaidy! Clear sequins and gold make up or gold dust would do the trick.
Lace cloche hat
Yes! I accept the challenge! Lace, fabric stiffener and some pearls should achieve this look, and it’s definitely one I’m going to try. Stay tuned.
Hope you pick a winner!
