There’s something about dress up that adds just an extra level of crazy to any party…
I will use any old excuse to dress up – I love costumes because they really let you take on another persona, if only for a night. And like any night out, I find the REAL fun is putting the outfit together and getting ready! But like anyone else, I don’t have heaps of time or stacks of money to spend on something I’ll wear once. And I’m pretty lazy.
So with that in mind, here are a few of my favourite DIY costumes I’ve pulled together in the final hour with minimal fuss and cost!
Making the skirt was the most challenging part of this outfit – and I nailed that in an afternoon (with the help of my mum!) by sewing together two skirts – one red and one black, slicing them down the midle, then sewing it onto a large stretchy black belt. For the fan, I found a paper fan at an op shop, painted it gold, and covered it with lace and and accessorized with sombrero, and red flowers. Ole!
A rainbow wig for my ponytail, a party hat for the horn, and a hula skirt for the tail. Then I dressed it up with legwarmers and heels.
I may have gone a little bit overboard on Sari’s when I went to India, and now, dresses up parties are a great excuse to pull them out! I always see Saris at op shops, so keep your eyes peeled.
Using a headband, some feathers, LOTS of glue and ribbon, I made fantastical headpiece that I paired with sparkly swimmers, and some blue shiny fabric.
TO COME!!! I have my body suit sorted, now for the wings! Here’s the tutorial I’m going to use to make my own…
